Racing at the end of the World – Countdown to the Antarctic Loppet 2025
In just a few weeks, skiers will embark on one of the most extraordinary journeys in the sport — the Antarctic Loppet, part of the Ski Classics Challengers circuit.
The 50km classic Antarctic Loppet expedition – with shorter distances also available – will depart from Chile on December 14 and take place from December 15 to 17, 2025, depending on weather conditions, at Union Glacier Camp in Antarctica’s Ellsworth Mountains.
Organized by Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE), the event offers a five-day experience that blends adventure, endurance, and discovery in one of the most extreme environments on the planet.

Where skiing meets exploration
Cross-country skiing is woven into Antarctica’s history. Over a century ago, Roald Amundsen’s team skied to the South Pole, relying on their skills for survival and success. The Antarctic Loppet celebrates that spirit — an homage to both human endurance and the frozen beauty of the White Continent.
“We hope this event not only celebrates the rich and storied history of cross-country skiing in Antarctica but also inspires individuals to care passionately about the continent to help advocate to protect its unique landscape,” says Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE).
The 50km course leads skiers across the Driscoll, Schneider, and Schanz glaciers, climbing nearly 762 meters through vast white horizons, glacial valleys, and views few humans have ever seen.
The story continues below.

A five-day polar journey
The Antarctic Loppet is not just a race — it’s a complete expedition. The journey begins in Chile, where participants board a flight to Union Glacier, a self-sufficient Antarctic basecamp powered by renewable energy.
Over five days, participants take part in lectures, guided excursions, and timed races across perfectly prepared routes.
