Jean-Marc Chabloz has become a well-known figure within the Swedish biathlon national team. Now, however, the shooting coach is stepping down. Here is what lies ahead for him, as the coaching carousel continues to turn across the biathlon world.

“It’s time for new challenges in life. I have been given the opportunity to take on a new dream job as a site manager at the Medstugan property at the Jämtland Housing Association. At the same time, it means that I am now leaving my role as a shooting coach after six fantastic years together with the absolute best gang,” Chabloz wrote on Facebook.

The Swiss coach, who has been based in Östersund, is now stepping away from elite biathlon.

“It’s with mixed emotions that I say goodbye. I will truly miss both the job and all the people who made this time so special. I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of this journey and for all the memories we’ve created together. What I take with me most strongly is not only what we achieved, but the relationships and friendships that grew along the way. I’ve made friends for life, and that is something I carry with great pride.”

A replacement has not yet been announced. However, it has been confirmed that head coach Johannes Lukas has signed a new contract with the Swedish Biathlon Association.

Replacement from Finland?

One name mentioned as a potential replacement is Finnish coach Jonne Kähkönen, who in recent years has worked with the Italian national team, including athletes such as Lisa Vittozzi, Dorothea Wierer, Tommaso Giacomel, and Lukas Hofer.

Reflecting on his time in Italy, Kähkönen wrote on Facebook:

“Four years ago, we started an Olympic project. For me, it was a step into the unknown: a new team and a new language I didn’t speak at all. The path is never straight—it has its ups and downs, and along the way, you discover the true nature of the team. Our team has been fantastic, always there for me, always by my side—and I for them.”

“It’s now time to move on and take the next step. The great memories will stay with us forever. I will always carry my time with the Italian team in my heart.”

Kähkönen is unlikely to return to Finland, where Norwegian coach Erik Torneus-Kulstad has extended his contract after strong results with the national team.

Coaching changes across nations

There are also major changes elsewhere. After ten years with Norway, French coach Siegfried Mazet is leaving the Norwegian team to return to France.

“I don’t yet know if I will coach the men’s or women’s team,” Mazet said. He has been widely credited for helping shape the success of the Bø brothers.

“Siegfried made us think like biathletes. We used to be cross-country skiers who trained skiing in the morning and did some shooting in the afternoon. With him, we became full biathletes and saw the bigger picture,” former star Marte Olsbu Røiseland told NRK.

Further changes are expected. Norway may also lose its women’s shooting coach Patrik Oberegger, while several experienced French coaches are stepping down.

Sverre Røiseland is stepping down from his coaching role in Germany, and biathlon legend Ole Einar Bjørndalen is being mentioned as a possible candidate for future roles. Meanwhile, Switzerland’s head coach Sandra Flunger and the USA’s head coach Armin Auchentaller have also announced their departures.

With multiple coaching changes across nations, the biathlon coaching carousel is already in full motion—even as the season has just concluded.
