Olympic gold medalists are expecting their first child – will impact the World Championships and the entire season.

Biathlon star Hanna Öberg and her partner Martin Ponsiluoma are expecting their first child.

“We have something to tell you! The upcoming season offers new challenges,” Öberg wrote in a social media post, where the Swedish biathlon couple showcased her baby bump.

This winter, Ponsiluoma won gold in the pursuit and bronze in the relay at the Olympics in Milano-Cortina. Hanna Öberg had a tough time at the Olympics but ended the season with a victory in the World Cup final in Holmenkollen and a second-place finish overall in the World Cup.

May miss World Championships

However, the couple has not revealed Öberg’s due date. There is no doubt that this winter’s season will be affected. The World Championships will take place in Otepää, Estonia, from February 9 to 21.

Whether the Swedish biathlon star will make it to the championships remains uncertain. Latvian biathlete Baiba Bendika made a remarkable comeback, finishing fifth in the sprint at the 2024 World Championships in Nove Mesto – just four months after giving birth to her son Emil.

Hanna Öberg boasts two Olympic gold medals in her collection, from the relay in Beijing 2022 and the individual normal distance in Pyeongchang 2018, as well as an Olympic silver from the relay in 2018.

This winter, Ponsiluoma won gold in the pursuit and bronze in the relay at the Olympics in Milan/Cortina. He also secured silver in the mass start at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. The 30-year-old from Östersund has two World Championship golds, along with two silvers and three bronzes.
