The Swedish biathlon season in Idre Fjäll started with a spectacular performance by Swedish Anna Magnusson and Ukrainian Vitalii Mandzyn. Check out the results for the short individual races.

Anna Magnusson, who repeated last year’s triumph by shooting a perfect 20/20, claimed a resounding victory in the women’s short individual race. Magnusson was unmatched on the shooting range and fast on the course, finishing 54 seconds ahead of Elvira Öberg, who entered as the favorite.

“It was a landslide victory,” said SVT expert Björn Ferry.

While Öberg managed a solid performance with only one missed shot, she uncharacteristically recorded the fourth-fastest skiing time, trailing Anna-Karin Heijdenberg. Meanwhile, Johanna Skottheim, competing independently outside the Swedish national team, delivered an impressive third-place finish despite two misses, ending 1:49 behind Magnusson.

Other notable performances included Ella Halvarsson, who demonstrated significant summer improvement in her first season with the A-national team. Halvarsson placed fourth with four misses but achieved the third-fastest skiing time, even outpacing Öberg. Last year’s breakout star, Anna-Karin Heijdenberg, struggled with too many misses to challenge for the podium but recorded the fastest skiing time by a considerable margin.

Ukrainian Surprise as Vitalii Mandzyn Wins Men’s Race

The men’s short individual race at Idre Fjäll saw unexpected results as Ukrainian biathlete Vitalii Mandzyn triumphed in challenging, windy conditions. Swedish favorite Jesper Nelin initially appeared poised for victory, sitting second after two rounds of shooting. However, two costly misses in the final shooting stage allowed Mandzyn to secure the win. Nelin finished second, 45 seconds behind.

The story continues below.

“The first two laps felt amazing like I was a machine,” Nelin said to SVT. “But the wind made shooting tricky, especially in the last standing stage. I tried my best, but it was tough.”

Viktor Brandt impressed with the fastest skiing time of the day, finishing third despite five shooting misses. He outpaced Nelin by 20 seconds on the course and was nearly a minute faster than Sebastian Samuelsson. Other Swedish favorites struggled, with Samuelsson and Martin Ponsiluoma both falling short of expectations due to shooting inconsistencies.
