Farewell to a legend: Norbert Starke, biathlon’s No. 1 fan, has passed away
Everyone who has been to an international biathlon competition has likely seen him and or spotted him on TV. Norbert Starke, the German with a white beard, mustache, and a hat adorned with over 400 pins was a true icon in the stands. Now, sadly, he has passed away.
For around 30 years, Starke followed biathlon with unmatched passion. Originally from Cologne, he attended his first race in Oberhof in 1992. What started as a curiosity quickly turned into a life’s mission. Ten times, he managed to visit every World Cup venue in a single season, something few fans can claim.
Starke wasn’t just known for his presence. His hat, a carnival-style cap with hundreds of pins, weighed almost 2.5 kilograms. It became his signature look, requiring structural support to hold its shape, according to inSüdthüringen.de. He was a fan favorite, often featured in photos and broadcasts and welcomed by athletes, staff, and spectators alike.
Biathlon, the sport Starke loved so deeply, combines cross-country skiing with precision rifle shooting. It’s one of the most challenging winter sports, requiring endurance, control, and mental strength. Events are held across Europe and beyond, with World Cups and Championships drawing large crowds and TV audiences.
Norbert Starke embodied the passion and spirit of the biathlon fan community. He wasn’t just a spectator – he was a symbol of what it means to live for the sport.
Starke passed away on Friday at the age of 84. His legacy will live on in the hearts of fans and the atmosphere of every biathlon stadium around the world.
