Ski star transported by ambulance to hospital
Another nightmare for the ski star: injured in an accident during training.
William Poromaa was transported to the hospital after falling during training, according to his father, Larry. The 25-year-old Swede was diagnosed with a fracture.
“He has broken his ankle. That has been confirmed, so he will be getting a cast now, as it looks. That’s all I know right now, so we’ll see how long he will be out,” Larry Poromaa told Sundsvall Tidning.
“It feels heavy for him”
Larry Poromaa acknowledges that this injury is another significant blow for his son, who had a challenging season in 2025/2026.
“It’s clear that it feels heavy for him right now, but it’s good to look at things positively. Fortunately, there are other ways to train,” Larry added.
A tough season
The injury comes after a winter that was not a highlight for the Swedish ski star.
Poromaa, who took silver just two seconds behind Klæbo in the World Championship 50km in Trondheim, was considered one of Sweden’s strongest medal prospects for the Milano-Cortina Olympics. However, it turned out to be a heavy burden.
After two distance races where he was far from the podium and a relay where Sweden finished last, Poromaa fell ill and returned home from Italy before the Olympic 50km.
In the 10-kilometer at the World Cup in Lahti in early March, he finished 45th.
Poromaa then withdrew from the remainder of the season.
“My body is not responding as I want, and with so little time left in the season, it’s right to end now and focus on the long term to give myself the best conditions for next winter,” he said before the World Cup in Drammen and Holmenkollen.
William Poromaa was now well into his preparations for the World Championships at home in Falun next winter. But after Sunday’s misfortune, he must prepare for alternative training for several weeks ahead. It is uncertain when he will return to normal training.
