When the terrain turns really steep, herringbone is the technique that gets you to the top.

It’s used when the climb is too steep for diagonal stride or double poling, giving you the grip you need by positioning your skis in a V shape.

With proper technique, you can climb efficiently without wasting unnecessary energy. The key is finding the right ski angle, keeping your body weight forward over the grip zone, and coordinating your poles with active, rhythmic leg work.

In this technique video, we show you how to improve your herringbone, avoid common mistakes, and maintain control even on demanding uphill sections.

The video is part of our series covering the fundamental techniques of classic cross-country skiing.
