The experienced Italian star challenged Johannes Høsflot Klæbo during the World Championships in Trondheim. Now he has become a father for the second time.

Federico Pellegrino and his wife Greta Laurent timed things perfectly: the Italian star managed to compete in both the World Championships in Trondheim and the World Cup finals well ahead of the arrival of their second child.

On the evening of Tuesday, April 16, Greta Laurent gave birth to their son, Fabien. The couple shared the news themselves on social media, according to FondoItalia.it.

The couple became parents for the first time on December 22, 2022, when Alexis Pellegrino was born.

Historic at the World Championships in Trondheim

When Pellegrino won silver in the sprint in Trondheim, he made history: the 34-year-old became the oldest medalist ever at a cross-country skiing championship.

Pellegrino finished six-tenths of a second behind World Championships star Johannes Høsflot Klæbo and well ahead of bronze medalist Lauri Vuorinen. After the incredible performance, tears flowed.

“I am the oldest medalist ever at the World Championships and Olympics, and I’m proud of that,” he said at the time.

The silver in the Trondheim sprint is the Italian’s seventh championship medal. Pellegrino won the sprint in Lahti at the 2017 World Championships and took silver in Seefeld in 2019. He also has two silver and two bronze medals in the team sprint, the latest from Planica 2023.

It’s been 14 years since Federico Pellegrino competed in his first World Championships. His debut was in 2011 in Holmenkollen.

The experienced Italian also has two Olympic medals from the three Olympic Games he has participated in. At the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics in South Korea, he won silver in the sprint. He repeated that feat at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Retiring in 10 Months

The silver from Trondheim will be Pellegrino’s last World Championship medal.

Last summer, the veteran announced that he would retire on February 22, 2026. That’s the date of the 50km race at the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be held on Italian soil.
