Olympic program highlights

Some of the most anticipated events in traditional cross-country skiing and biathlon:

Traditional cross-country skiing highlights

  • Men’s and Women’s Individual Races – Freestyle races showcasing speed, endurance, and tactics.
  • Sprint and Team Sprints – Short-distance, high-intensity races where athletes push their limits over 1–1.5 km. Team sprints pair two skiers per nation, alternating laps in fast-paced exchanges, often leading to thrilling photo finishes.
  • Skiathlon: A combined-format race starting with the classic technique and switching mid-race to freestyle. Skiers must quickly change skis and poles in a transition zone, testing versatility, endurance, and tactical awareness.
  • Relays – Exciting team events combining strategy and stamina over multiple legs, with each skier contributing to their nation’s overall performance.
  • 50km – The ultimate test of endurance and skiing technique, where strategy, pacing, and resilience are key.

Biathlon highlights

  • Individual Races – Traditional biathlon with shooting accuracy determining medal positions over long distances, with time penalties for missed shots.
  • Sprint and Pursuit Events – High-speed races where every second counts. Sprint results determine the start order for Pursuit, often reshuffling podium favorites and creating intense head-to-head battles.
  • Relays and Mixed Relays – Dynamic team events combining men’s and women’s teams, full of drama and strategy.
  • Mass Start – All qualified athletes start together, racing head-to-head. Biathlon Mass Start events are highly tactical, with position, pacing, and shooting under pressure often deciding the podium in the final laps.
