At the 2025 FIS Nordic Ski World Championships in Trondheim, Norway, Jessie and her teammates on the Stifel U.S. Cross Country Ski Team are wearing race suits designed to highlight the urgency of climate change.

Diggins played a key role in ensuring that the cross-country team was included in this initiative. She emphasised the broader message behind the suits:

“I am very, very proud that we get to wear these suits and this is something that I actually went and campaigned for to include cross-country in these suits because I think it’s really important that we get to make it about more than just a ski race. This is the future of our sport and it’s the future of our planet.”

An opportunity to stand up for something bigger

“Of course we are here to focus on racing and performance, but we’re also trying to be good humans and good teammates and good stewards for our sport. Speaking at least for myself, it’s very meaningful to get to stand up for something that I believe is right and to get to wear it outwardly on my suit at World Championships. That said, my focus is to race for my team and not have it be political, but I don’t think it needs to be.”

She pointed to increasingly warm and inconsistent winter conditions as a pressing concern:

“We’re all on the same team here, we’re all on the same planet, we all breathe the same air for the rest of our lives and this is the only planet we get and it’s important to protect it. So I think it’s a really timely message, especially because we were out skiing in slush and super warm conditions in Trondheim in February. We’ve had many, many World Championships that have been slushy and sunny and up to 70 degrees.”

Messaging that extends beyond skiing

“I think it’s really a privilege to get to wear a suit that makes it so much more meaningful than just trying to win.”

U.S. Ski & Snowboard echoes the importance of the initiative. “Climate change directly impacts our athletes and the mountains we cherish. By incorporating a climate change theme into our race suits for the World Championships again, we hope to continue driving awareness and action.” said Sophie Goldschmidt, President and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “These suits are a powerful reminder that we must protect the future of winter sports and our planet.”

The suits, designed in partnership with POW and Kappa. The suits feature imagery of melting glaciers, symbolizing the impact of climate change on winter sports.

POW CEO Erin Sprague reinforced the broader significance: “POW fights for clean air, clean water and a healthy environment for all; we’re proud to stand alongside the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team as it puts this mission on the global stage. The suits will spark global awareness and conversations about climate change and further the climate movement in outdoor communities. Moving us closer to common-ground, common-sense solutions needed to tackle the climate crisis. We’re all in this together, and we are excited to see the Stifel U.S. Ski Team racing in these suits.”
