The International Ski & Snowboard Federation – FIS is making a historic change. This winter, both women and men will race the 50km at Holmenkollen on the same day.

The legendary 50km event in Holmenkollen returns to the competition calendar next winter season and is scheduled for March 14, 2026. But despite the race’s deep tradition, a groundbreaking change will mark its comeback.

For the first time ever, both women and men will compete over the 50km distance on the same day. They will hit the tracks nearly simultaneously, with the men starting first and the women set to follow just 45 minutes later.

FIS confirmed the news on Wednesday, stating:

“As previously communicated and confirmed at the Spring Meeting, the 50km races for both Women and Men in Oslo will be held on the same day. Following discussions with FIS and the Norwegian Ski Federation, it has now been decided that the interval between the two races will be 45 minutes. The Men’s race will start first, followed by the Women’s race.

Exact starting times for both events are still to be determined.

Subject to approval by the FIS Council.”

Agreement with the Norwegian Ski Association

The change has been made in collaboration with the Norwegian Ski Federation. Norwegian national team manager Ulf Morten Aune welcomed the news as a major development for the sport.

“This is big and important news for cross-country skiing both internationally and nationally. It’s very pleasing that we’ve been able to make this happen,” Aune told Norwegian news agency NTB.

He emphasized that the move will enhance the product of cross-country skiing and improve the experience for spectators:

“For cross-country skiing as a product, this could be very good, and the audience can follow both the men’s and women’s races closely. Our coaches have also been involved in the discussion, and this is going to be very exciting,” Aune added.
