Antarctic Loppet becomes part of the Ski Classics Challengers circuit with a 50km long-distance skiing race in classic technique at Union Glacier Camp, Antarctica, this January.

Antarctic Loppet is a 5-day program of cross-country ski races of varying distances (10km, 20km, 50km) to be held in the Union Glacier area of the Ellsworth Mountains of Antarctica, from January 16 to 20, 2025.

The 10km and 20km timed events will be held on a 10km loop near the iconic Union Glacier camp. For the more adventurous, the 50km course, a Ski Classics Challengers event, traverses the Driscoll, Schneider, and Schanz glaciers, featuring a challenging elevation gain of about 762 meters (depending on the weather conditions, the 50km event date will be confirmed from January 18-20).

Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE), the company behind the event, is pleased to join the Ski Classics Challengers calendar:

“ALE is excited about its newest experience, the Antarctic Loppet, which is joining the Ski Classics Challengers circuit. We hope this event not only celebrates the rich and storied history of cross-country skiing in Antarctica but also inspires individuals to care passionately about the continent to help advocate to protect its unique landscape.”

Antarctic Loppet

Cross-country skiing has a long and storied heritage in Antarctica. Amundsen’s team was the first to reach the South Pole, and their skiing ability was key to their success.

Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions (ALE) is proud to offer the newest experience to celebrate this key element of Antarctica’s heritage and invites cross-country skiing enthusiasts to be a part of modern sporting history.

The term Loppet is Scandinavian in origin and refers to a long-distance cross-country skiing event. Whether you are an elite athlete looking to push yourself in a new environment or a cross-country skiing enthusiast seeking adventure on the White Continent, the Antarctic Loppet provides an incredible opportunity like no other.

ALE’s exclusive travel itinerary offers guests the opportunity to learn from specially curated lectures, compete in the timed Antarctic cross-country skiing events, and take part in guided excursions to some stunning Union Glacier locations. Personal ski time and a celebratory event round out this experience, which honors cross-country skiing as an important aspect of Antarctic history.
