Mazet to step down after 2026 Olympics
The biathlon coach has been a pillar for the Norwegian national team for many years. In February, it will be over.
After nine seasons as a central figure on the Norwegian biathlon team, Frenchman Siegfried Mazet will step down as coach after the upcoming season. The announcement was made during the Blink Festival in Sandnes.
“I have had a fantastic time with the Norwegian national team and would like to say a big thank you. I have had an incredibly good time here. But after almost 10 years, I now want to pass the baton on,” Mazet said in a press release from The Norwegian Biathlon Association.
“Siegfried has undoubtedly been a beacon in Norwegian biathlon. He has lifted both athletes and coaches to a new level, and his footprint will be visible for many years to come. We are grateful for the journey we have had together,” said Morten Djupvik, Secretary General of the Norwegian Biathlon Association.
The Frenchman came to Norway in 2016, and the Biathlon Association describes him as “a key figure behind the Norwegian athletes’ success.”
Emotional Moment
Mazet says it was special to deliver the news to the team.
“The guys were surprised. They did not expect it to come now before the season. But afterwards they understood — and they were happy for me. I received some kind words, especially from Sturla. It was emotional,” Mazet said.
“Siegfried doesn’t see us just as biathletes, but as whole people. He has been important for us on the team, both as a coach and as a person,” said biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid.
Hints at Return to France
The 47-year-old reveals he does not feel finished as a coach.
“I have no idea where, but that’s the plan. I want to continue, but with another team,” he told TV2.
Mazet was the coach of the French national team from 2008 until coming to Norway in 2016, working with, among others, biathlon legend Martin Fourcade. He would be open to another stint there.
“It would of course be interesting if they call,” he said.
And the idea of the 2030 Winter Olympics being held in the French Alps is tempting for the coaching veteran.
“It’s an interesting project. I am open to anything,” said Mazet.
