Lahti 2029: Nordic World Ski Championships dates officially set
Mark your calendars. The Nordic World Ski Championships will return to Lahti, Finland, for the first time since 2017, with FIS officially locking in the dates at its spring meetings in Slovenia.
Lahti is gearing up for one of cross-country skiing’s biggest occasions. FIS has officially confirmed that the Nordic World Ski Championships will take place from February 28 to March 11, 2029, in Lahti, Finland.
The announcement came out of the Technical Committee Spring Meetings in Portorož, Slovenia, though organizers stress the news simply formalizes what has been a long-running preparation process. The local organizing committee has already held three FIS Coordination Group meetings, most recently in April, working through everything from venue development and competition scheduling to marketing strategy and media logistics.
“The World Championships project is currently progressing exactly as planned. We have been building a long-term strategy for the event well in advance, and it is great to see that FIS also regards Lahti as an excellent environment for the upcoming championships and values Lahti as a host city,” said Tomi-Pekka Kolu, secretary general of the Salpausselkä Games and the 2029 World Championships, in a press release.
Sirpa Korkatti, who chairs both the organizing committee and the Finnish Ski Association, echoed that confidence:
“The confirmation of the World Championships dates makes 2029 even more concrete for all of us. We have an experienced and committed core team in place, and the work continues ambitiously, but with great enthusiasm and pride.”
With the date now set, the city has entered a busy run-in period. The Salpausselkä Games will be held in Lahti in both 2027 and 2028, and the Winter World Masters Games are also scheduled there in 2028, giving organizers multiple opportunities to stress-test infrastructure and operations before the main event.
The 2029 championships will be Lahti’s eighth time hosting the Nordic Worlds.
