The wait is over. The 2025/2026 cross-country ski season officially begins this weekend in Olos/Muonio, where a strong international field will line up for three days of racing. With 40 Norwegian athletes on the start list and World Cup winners and World Champions from across Europe joining the action, the event marks the first major test of the winter ahead of the Olympic season.

This traditional race weekend in northern Finland serves as the first opportunity for elite skiers to test their shape on snow since the World Cup finals in March. The program includes three competitions — classic sprint, 10km classic, and 10km freestyle — with two of them (sprint classic and 10km freestyle) also part of the upcoming Olympic schedule in Milano-Cortina 2026.

Strong international field

The 2025 edition of the Olos/Muonio season opener is particularly significant, as the Winter Olympics are now less than three months away, and national team selections will continue through mid-January. That sense of urgency is reflected in the start lists, which feature athletes from 24 nations, including World Champions, World Cup winners, and several national A-teams.

From Norway, 40 skiers will compete, facing strong opposition from Italy’s sprint star Federico Pellegrino, Germany’s Friedrich Moch, Austria’s Benjamin Moser, and almost the entire Finnish national team. On the women’s side, Finland fields a potent lineup led by Jasmi Joensuu and Kerttu Niskanen, joined by national teams from Germany, Italy, and Austria.

• 11:00 CET: Heats/finals

November 15, Saturday: 10km Interval Start Classic (More information can be found HERE)

• 8:45 CET: Broadcast start
• 9:00 CET: Women’s race first, followed immediately by the Men’s

November 16, Sunday: 10km Interval Start Freestyle (More information can be found HERE)

The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will take place from February 6 to 22, 2026, featuring both the 10km freestyle and classic sprint events seen this weekend in Olos/Muonio.
