Russian skier Dariya Nepryaeva was in tears after the FIS decision to uphold the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes, confirming they will miss the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Nepryaeva, one of Russia’s most talented cross-country skiers, broke down emotionally after the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) confirmed its decision to continue the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes from all international competitions. The ruling also means athletes from these nations will not be allowed to compete at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

Reacting to the news, Nepryaeva posted on her social media:

“No Olympics in 2026, guys 😔💔,” visible moved after the announcement earlier this week.

The decision follows the recent FIS Council meeting, where the Federation once again extended the suspension of Russian and Belarusian athletes. In a statement, FIS clarified that the Council voted not to facilitate the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) in qualification events for the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

“The International Olympic Committee’s AIN regime has been set out as a possible pathway for athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete in the Olympic Games, with each International Federation remaining responsible for the decision on whether to allow these athletes to take part in its existing qualification system,” the FIS statement read.

The ruling has sparked strong reactions in Russia, with national sports leaders and several athletes expressing frustration and disappointment. Russian media described the decision as “unfair” and “political,” while others have called for further appeals against the continued exclusion.

For now, the suspension remains in place, keeping Russian and Belarusian athletes sidelined from all FIS competitions for another season — and from the upcoming Winter Olympics.
