Biathlon star endured training nightmare: “The bike ride from hell”
The last time the Norwegian biathlon star went on a bike ride, he ended up in the emergency room with deep wounds. This weekend’s ride didn’t go much better either.
When biathlon star Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen went out for a mountain bike ride during the Ascension Day weekend, things went seriously wrong. The workout ended with deep wounds.

Another Ride from Hell
The accident didn’t scare Sjåstad Christiansen enough to stay off the bike, and during the Pentecost weekend, he tried again with a ride in Nordmarka. That session also didn’t go as planned.
“The bike ride from hell,” the 32-year-old commented on his Instagram account.
During the ride, Sjåstad Christiansen and his friend Vetle Ravnsborg Gurigard – who, incidentally, won the Birkebeiner Race in 2007 in the M16–19 class – faced both meteorological and technical challenges in abundance.
The two had to seek shelter under large trees when they were hit by hailstones the size of marbles. They had four flat tires and ended up taking the bus home, with three flat tires.
Sjåstad Christiansen is one of six men on the Norwegian National Team for the 2025/2026 Olympic season.

More Biathletes Hitting the Deck
Sjåstad Christiansen isn’t the only biathlon star who’s had a rough time training on a bike.
Last year, double world champion Endre Strømsheim had to be hospitalized after a head-on collision with another cyclist.
Karoline Knotten also sustained serious injuries in a crash during a bike ride with fellow biathlete Lotte Lie a few years ago. That session ended in the emergency room in Lillehammer.
Cycling is Trending
Cycling is becoming increasingly popular as a form of training among skiers. Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen is far from the only ski star now regularly incorporating bike sessions as an important part of their off-season training.
Among them are Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, Harald Østberg Amundsen, and Ski Classics Legend Andreas Nygaard.
