With the IBU World Championships set to kick off in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, American biathlete Deedra Irwin is entering the biggest event of the season with confidence

Following a strong training block in Antholz, Italy, Irwin is feeling both physically prepared and mentally ready to take on the competition.

“We had a great camp in Antholz, Italy after the World Cup so physically I’m feeling great! And (knock on wood) I’m going into World Championships healthy this year! First time in a while!” Irwin says. Staying healthy leading into a major event is no small feat in a grueling sport like biathlon, and she is relishing the opportunity to compete at full strength. “Mentally, World Champs is always a lot to prepare for but I think I’ve put in some good work, and last year in Lenzerheide I had my best World Cup results, so I’m feeling pretty confident about the races!”

Fine-Tuning for Peak Performance

The lead-up to a World Championship is an important time for athletes to sharpen their form, analyze race strategies, and ensure every detail is dialed in. Irwin and her team have done just that.

“We have done a lot of analysis on my racing and found a few areas both in strategy and technique to work on leading up to these races,” she explains. “I can just hope now that my current form is good enough on the race days to put together the type of races I’ve been preparing for.”

Biathlon is a sport where the smallest adjustments can make the biggest differences. Irwin’s commitment to refining her approach has been evident throughout her career, from her transition from cross-country skiing to her steady rise in the international biathlon ranks.

A Familiar Course

Having raced in Lenzerheide before, Irwin knows what to expect from the venue—though conditions in biathlon are always a variable factor.

“The venue is really beautiful and it’s a fun course. However, it’s very sunny here, which makes racing very warm and can quickly change the snow conditions,” she notes. “After skiing today, I think the organizers have done an amazing job preparing the course, and now we will just have to see what Mother Nature has in store for the next couple weeks.”

Chasing Big Goals at World Championships

Every season brings new goals, and for Irwin, the objectives in Lenzerheide are clear:

“I would love another top-15 result at World Champs and to qualify for the Mass Start,” she says. “Every season I’d like to improve on the previous year. Last year I had some great results and ended up ranked in the top-40 overall. I’m not totally on track for that this year, but it’s biathlon and anything can happen. So going into the final trimester I’m just going to keep pushing for some great results.”
