Long-distance skier Sandra Schützová has endured exceptionally challenging months filled with uncertainty and stress. After two years with the Norwegian team, Team Kaffebryggeriet DRIV, she had to confront her future almost overnight. The Czech skier ultimately decided to go all in on one option.

The months following the end of last season were mentally exhausting for Sandra Schützová. Although she had initially verbally agreed to continue with her current Norwegian team, Team Kaffebryggeriet DRIV, complications arose, turning the agreement into uncertainty.

“For a long time, I believed everything would go as we had agreed. However, by the end of the summer break, I started to feel a bit skeptical and impatient,” Schützová describes to Bezky.net. After the August race Alliansloppet, she decided to explore other options, and unexpectedly, new offers emerged.

However, with team registrations for the Ski Classics World Championship approaching, she found herself in a dilemma. One offer required a clear decision by Saturday morning, while another team promised to provide details about personnel and material support only by Monday. Schützová chose to take a significant risk; she declined the first offer and lived in suspense until Monday. A fortunate resolution came during training.

“On Monday during the morning training, I received the green light, and shortly after that, the final conditions from my former team,” she recalls, reflecting on the relief she felt.

Dream choice

Ultimately, the decision about where to go was not just about numbers but also about passion. The team led by legendary Petter Northug had long been a goal for the Czech athlete.

“By the end of last season, I had two teams I wanted to join, and one of them was the Burger King – Northug team. When the opportunity to join Petter arose, I felt it was the path I wanted to take,” she explains.

In her new environment, Sandra will also have no problem acclimatizing, as she knows the female members of the team very well:

“I know the girls; I was with Hedda in the Czech team and with Fanny and Maren in the Kaffebryggeriet DRIV team. I know the guys mostly by sight. But I don’t think there’s anything that wouldn’t fit or that I would think is or should be wrong.”

Dancing boss

The communication with team leader Petter Northug is also unique. The Norwegian legend is currently participating in a television dance competition, and his schedule is packed.

“The communication is somewhat affected by that. However, whenever I asked him anything, he would respond as soon as he finished dancing,” Schützová smiles, noting that she already has the basic framework for pre-season camps and the season plan.

Despite the immense pressure and the absence of a contract, the Czech representative managed to train all summer according to plan. Her main goal now is to regain her mental peace and comfort.

Uncertainties around skis

Before the start of the winter season, Sandra Schützová faces another challenge regarding a potential change of ski brand. All details and testing of new materials are still under discussion and negotiation.
