From Öberg power to German precision: What went down on day two at Idre Fjäll

On the second day of the Swedish biathlon season opener at Idre Fjäll, sprint races brought clear winners — and strong warning signs for everyone else.

While Elvira Öberg confirmed her elite status with a decisive win, windy conditions and costly shooting spelled trouble for the Swedish men as the Germans seized the opportunity.

Elvira Öberg responds brilliantly

One day after her sister Hanna Öberg delivered a commanding victory, Elvira took center stage. She skied fast, shot clean (0 misses), and put more than a minute between herself and the rest of the field.

Behind her, Janina Hettich-Walz (GER) crossed second, more than 60 seconds down, proving that the margin was not just about speed but composure. Hanna Öberg followed in third after solid skiing, making it a strong showing for the Öberg sisters.

The rest of the top five included Lisa Vittozzi (ITA) and Anna Magnusson (SWE), both putting in consistent performances.

Wind, pressure, and costly misses for the men

On the men’s side, things went very differently. The conditions turned tricky — gusty winds tested shooters across the range. According to Langd.se, several Swedish top names “shot themselves out” of podium contention.

Sebastian Samuelsson appeared in control for most of the race, but four missed shots in the final shooting stage dropped him well back in the results. Martin Ponsiluoma, usually a reliable shooter, had a day to forget: two misses in prone, two in standing. Despite blazing speed in the course — he ranked near the top for pure skiing time — he ended up in 4th place.

One of the brighter spots for Sweden was Victor Berglund, a younger prospect, who showed resilience with just one miss and secured 7th place.

German precision pays off

While the Swedes scrambled, the German team was calm and composed. Lucas Fratzscher won the sprint, David Zobel came second, and Johannes Kühn rounded out a German podium sweep. Such dominance will give them serious momentum and confidence heading into the rest of the season.

Looking ahead

Idre Fjäll’s opening weekend has already delivered a major storyline: German precision in the men, Öberg’s dominance in the women, and question marks over Sweden’s ability to deliver when it counts. As the biathlon season unfolds, the Swedes will have to sharpen their shooting — especially in windy conditions — or risk falling behind crucial rivals.
