Top biathlon coach set for France role
The successful French biathlon coach, who has been part of Norway’s setup, is set to take up a leading role within the French national team, joining the staff of Norway’s long-time rivals.
The coach behind Norwegian superstars such as brothers Johannes Thingnes Bø and Tarjei Bø, Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, Johannes Dale-Skjevdal, and Sturla Holm Lægreid is leaving Norway.
In one month, the contract of Norwegian national team shooting coach Siegfried Mazet expires. The Frenchman has been a cornerstone of Norway’s elite biathlon team for ten years. After the World Cup final in Oslo on March 22, he will step down. Now, the 48-year-old is reportedly set to take on a similar role with the French national biathlon team.
Straight into a top job
In an interview with the French newspaper L’Equipe, one of the technicians on the French team reveals that Mazet will be formally appointed as the head shooting coach of the French national team.
“He will be officially announced as head shooting coach in a couple of weeks, with the 2030 Olympics on home snow in the French Alps as a major goal,” the technician said in Saturday’s interview.
Mazet has previously hinted that he would be interested in the position if offered.
Known since August
Mazet dropped the bombshell that he would step down after this season already in August, the day before the biathlon competitions at the Blink Festival in Sandnes.
The news hit several of the athletes hard. But Mazet himself has also built strong ties to the Norwegian team.
The process of finding Mazet’s successor is already underway.
