After Olympic bronze: opens up about affair on live TV
Sturla Holm Lægreid took bronze in the Olympic 20km individual on Tuesday afternoon. Then he dropped a real bomb.
The bronze in Tuesday’s individual race at the Olympics is the 28-year-old’s first podium of the season — and his first Olympic medal. The post-race interview starts normally.
“It’s big. It’s my first Olympic medal. I want to thank everyone who has supported me,” Lægreid says.
Then the tears come.
“There is someone I want to share this with who maybe isn’t watching today,” Lægreid tells NRK after crossing the finish line.
And then the biathlon star drops a real bombshell.

Opens up about cheating on live TV
“There is someone perhaps not watching today. Six months ago, I met the love of my life — the most beautiful, nicest person in the World. Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life and was unfaithful to her,” Lægreid says.
He continues:
“I told her about it a week ago. It has been the worst week of my life. I had the gold medal in life — and many people probably look at me differently now — but I only have eyes for her. I don’t really know why I’m saying this now, but lately sport has come second. I wish I could share this with her.”
Lægreid is honest about the situation affecting him and that he deeply regrets his actions.
“I try to be a good role model, but I’ve done something stupid. When you make mistakes, it hurts. It’s heavy when you do something you can’t stand for.”
Afterward, he gets criticism for the moment.
“It came as a big surprise. It was the wrong thing to do — we saw a remorseful boy standing there. Both the time, the place, and the timing were unfortunately completely wrong,” says Johannes Thingnes Bø in NRK’s studio.
Despite that, the bronze medal means that Lægreid will continue to compete at the Olympics. He had to deliver this performance to secure a start in the sprint and subsequent races in the championship.
