Swedish Coach Trio Extends Contract With Cross-Country National Team

The Swedish national team’s coaching staff is undergoing some changes but continues with long-term perspective and continuity as keywords. With a stable coaching trio at its core, the organization is now aiming four years ahead for the Olympics in Cortina 2026.

Stefan Thomson, Anders Högberg and Lars Ljung continue as Swedish national team coaches.

The 2021/2022 season is coming to an end, which means that the national team organization has set a coaching foundation for the coming years.

Anders Högberg, Lars Ljung, and Stefan Thomson will remain as the Swedish national team coaches and thus continue in their previous roles with newly signed four-year contracts.

“It feels very good that we get to continue the work we have started together in the coaching team and that we can now think long-term towards the upcoming championships,” says national team manager Anders Byström.

Women’s coach Magnus Ingesson chooses to move on and thus does not extend his contract. A decision that he describes as a process.

“It has not been an easy decision. I have thought for a long time but finally ended up going back to my job as a police officer where I was on leave,” says Magnus Ingesson.

He has been assigned as a women’s coach since 2018. But Ingesson has been associated with the cross-country national team for much longer than that, with assignments as national team coach from 2007 to 2010 and as a personal trainer for several active skiers, including Charlotte Kalla.

“It will of course be difficult to leave, but I feel very satisfied with what I have done for and with the national team,” he says.
The national team manager about the decision:

“Magnus Ingesson leaves a void behind. His experience, feeling, and knowledge have greatly contributed to our successes in recent years. We are grateful that he will continue to be behind the scenes as a coach for, among others, Jonna Sundling and have close contact with our national team coaches. We also hope that at some point in the future he wants to return to the national team,” says Anders Byström.

The national team organization will partly replace the vacant coaching position with a national team coach who will primarily work in the national team part-time. The recruitment process is underway with the goal of having the position in place during the month of June.
