Alvar Myhlback, Lager 157 Ski Team, is the skier everyone is talking about. Considered a “pearl” by Petter Northug, the 16-year-old Swedish skier is about to start his first season as a Pro Tour skier, competing at the Ski Classics circuit. 

But why is Alvar considered a talent? To start, he has won Tanumsloppet, racing against some of the best long-distance skiers. Myhlback finished the race in front of skiers like Max Novak and Thomas Gifstad.

Then, at the Swedish premiere in Bruksvallarna, he finished in the 3rd position at his first sprint race ever and in front of the Swedish elite skiers. Finally, he has just won the traditional Swedish long-distance premiere in Edsåsdalen, racing faster than Emil Persson, Torleif Syrstad, and Nils Dahlsten, beating Emil in the sprint.

“It was a fast race from the start,” says Alvar on a chat with ProXCskiing and continues: 

“The race was really hard. Emil and Person set a very fast tempo. I am really glad to beat Emil Persson for the first time,” says Alvar referring to his teammate, who is one of the strongest contenders for the Ski Classics Champion title.

This will be the first season Alvar Myhlback will be racing as a Pro Tour athlete. The results throughout summer and in Edsåsdalen show that the young skier is someone to keep an eye on and that he is feeling motivated after such a good summer season.

“This summer was a really good summer with a lot of training and racing. We don’t compete that much during the summer, but when we do and get great results, that’s good motivation to continue the hard training until the winter.”

But despite his impressive performance, the Swedish skier is humble when talking about his goals. 

“I haven’t set any goals for this Ski Classics season. I just want to compete and ski the fastest I can,” shares Alvar.

Despite being a Lager 157 Ski Team athlete, whose focus is the long-distance circuit, Myhlback has his own goals for the season. 

“I will race Ski Classics events this Winter, but I will focus on the Junior World Championships and also on getting qualified for the World Cup.”

At the end of our talk, we couldn’t resist thinking about how much a 16-year-old skier, who is challenging the elite of the sport, is able to train. With a smile on his face, Alvar just replied to us: 

“Yes, I train a lot!”

The Season XIV of Ski Classics Pro Tour consists of 14 events on 10 event weekends in 6 different countries. 

The season kicks off in Austria with the Bad Gastein Pro Team Tempo on Saturday, December 10, followed the next day by the Bad Gastein Criterium and ends in Northern Norway with the 67km Ski Classics Finale Summit 2 Senja, on April 2, 2023.
