König Ludwig Lauf, a Ski Classics Challengers event planned to take place in Oberammergau, Germany, on February 4, 2024, is now canceled due to adverse weather and snow conditions.

The 45km long König Ludwig Lauf takes place annually in the beautiful landscape of Ammergau Alps, Bavaria, Germany. Still, it had to be canceled for 2024 due to adverse weather and snow conditions.

The Local Organizing Committee released a notice about the cancelation on their official website:

“CANCELLATION DUE TO BAD WEATHER

Dear Participants,

We regret to inform you that the König Ludwig Lauf 2024 has to be canceled due to adverse weather conditions (heavy rain, warm spells, and strong wind). Unfortunately, an improvement in the weather is not in sight.

Despite artificial snow, key parts of the course, such as the starting field, connecting trails, and river crossings, have been washed over. The strong winds have also caused damage along the course, meaning that the necessary safety for participants in wooded areas can no longer be guaranteed.

As the König Ludwig Lauf passes through one of the largest contiguous nature reserves in Europe, which we aim to preserve for future generations, the use of artificial snow is not possible everywhere. Nature conservation, sustainability, and the promotion of mass sports are far more important to us than commercial considerations.

We are a traditional event characterized by the unique landscape, Bavarian coziness, and professionalism. We want to preserve this feeling for you and not force an unsatisfactory event for all parties involved.

This is a difficult situation for us, as 3/4 of all expenses for the 2024 event have already been incurred, and a year with hundreds of hours of work by many volunteers has been in vain.

We hope that you will continue to support us and participate in 2025.

Your registration fees will be transferred to the year 2025. If you do not wish this, a form will be available on our website starting February 4, 2024, through which you can request a refund of 50% of the paid registration fee, minus transfer and administrative costs. We would also appreciate a donation of the registration fee to ensure the event’s continuation.

We continue to work for you so that the traditional König Ludwig Lauf event will last for many years to come. Those who feel like running are welcome to visit us in the fall of 2024. It will be worth it. More information will be available on our website soon.

Many thanks for your understanding and warm greetings from the Ammergauer Alps Nature Park.

Your highly motivated,
König Ludwig Lauf Team”
