Flyktningerennet 2023 Draws Top Pro Tour Athletes To Norway-Sweden Border

by Leandro Lutz • 22.03.2023
The Ski Classics Challengers event Flyktningerennet is a 44km long-distance race in classic technique this Sunday, March 26, in Norway-Sweden, and Pro Tour athletes are ready to make their mark.

Flyktningerennet is a long-distance skiing race in classic technique held annually, with a history going back to 1950 when the first race, also called Flyktningloppet in Sweden, took place to honor and remember the refugees escaping across the border from Norway to Sweden during World War II.

The 44km long-distance race in classic technique stretches from Nordli, Norway, to Gäddede, Sweden, and is part of the Ski Classics Challengers series.

According to the Local Organizing Committee, the 71st edition of the Flyktningerennet is ready to take place this weekend and promises to be an exciting event, with some of the best Pro Tour skiers on the starting line.

Petter Northug, Team Northug Crucible, and Emil Persson, Lager 157 Ski Team, are some of the favorites for the race, having enjoyed a successful season so far. However, they will face stiff competition from many talented long-distance athletes, all vying for the top spots.

On the women’s side, Ida Dahl, Team Engcon, currently the Ski Classics Champion leader overall, is registered for Flyktningerennet. Dahl will face competition from Emilie Fleten, Team Ramudden, and Marte Skaanes (if not named to the National Team for the Lahti World Cup).

Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Emil Persson, Lager 157 Ski Team, will face a tough challenge from Petter Northug, Team Northug Crucible, who has won Flyktningerennet four times in the past.

Other top contenders include Kasper Stadaas, Team Ragde Charge; Amund Riege and Herman Paus, Team Ramudden; and Axel Jutterström and Joel Andersson, Team Eksjöhus. Previous winners Oskar Kardin, Team Ragde Charge, and Ole Jørgen Bruvoll, Lierne/Trondheim, are expected to be on the start line, as well as Anton Elvseth, Team Engcon.
