The Ski Classics Challengers event Taivalkoski – Syöte, former ‘We are the Ski Family Syöte,’ scheduled to take place this Saturday, has been postponed.

Taivalkoski – Syöte, former ‘We are the Ski Family Syöte,’ roller skiing event is part of the Ski Classics Challengers circuit with a 40-kilometer classic roller skiing race in Taivalkoski, Finland. The event was planned for this Saturday, June 8, 2024, but now is postponed.

According to a press release from the Local Organizing Committee, the event is postponed to a later date due to the low number of registered participants in early June.

“Taivalkoski-Syöte Challengers race postponed, youth uphill race to go ahead as planned.

The Taivalkoski-Syöte Challengers roller skiing competition scheduled for Saturday, June 8, has been postponed. Still, the We Are The Ski Family camp and competition, which attracted many participants, will go ahead as planned. Competition director Matti Tyni says that the timing of the long-distance competition at the beginning of the training season is not ideal in Finland.

In Sweden and Norway, many skiers compete in their first races around this time, but there is little interest in Finland. The most sensible option is to postpone the event. We are currently exploring a new date,” says Tyni. The most likely option is like last year’s in July.

The competition will be broadcast live. According to Tyni, the organizers have invested heavily in live TV production. Long-distance skiing can only be presented to a large audience with live images. This will also better expose the athletes and event partners.

The youth camp and the uphill competition will be organized as planned. Heikki Korpela, who runs the youth camp, says that almost 40 young skiers have already signed up for the camp.

The Youth Camp has been a positive surprise. Originally, the event was to be developed as a skiing event for the whole family, but for this year, the We Are The Ski Family camp and the adult Challengers race will be held on separate dates. I see this change as a positive thing. Both Lauri Mannila and I can focus more on developing the youngsters instead of competing on our own.

Teemu Pasanen has also promised to lead a training session for the camp’s youngsters and lecture those interested in the Finnish coaching line. I want to thank Teemu in advance for his contribution to Finnish youth skiing, says Korpela.”
